Fenwick starts Knights of Columbus group
Thursday, February 12, 2009

Bishop Fenwick High School is honored to become the first school based Columbian Squires circle in the State of Ohio. The Columbian Squires is the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus. Squires are dedicated to promoting service and the Catholic faith – while providing opportunities for fun and leadership training to young men throughout the world. As an organization of more than 1300 circles with nearly 25,000 youth members, the Columbian Squires is making a difference in the world and in the Church. The Squires are active in Canada, the United States, the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Guam.

The Columbian Squires program gives young men and women leadership training and the spiritual and moral guidance that they need to succeed in life. Local units of the Squires, called Circles, are modeled after Knights of Columbus Councils.

The Fenwick Squires circle is sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus organization and officially will be called The Bishop Edward D. Fenwick Circle # 5266. The local sponsoring adult councils are John Paul II Council #1610, Council #14400 Franklin, and Council #14408 from Lebanon. The newly formed Squires are part of the service and volunteer organizations at Bishop Fenwick High School. Students serving in the capacity of officers and board members are: Joe Krug, junior (Springboro) Chief Squire, Michael Orr, junior (Miamisburg). Board members are: Adam Griffith, sophomore (Miamisburg), Ricky Pearce, sophomore (Middletown), Andrew Schaffer, junior (Springboro), Derek Arwine, junior (Springboro), and P.J. Hemmelgarn, junior (Dayton). Spenser Hickey, sophomore (Middletown) serves as Marshall. The membership is growing at Fenwick with 48 young men as members. Plans are to begin a circle for young women at Bishop Fenwick High School.

The Circle has four main activity committees - spiritual, service, circle and membership. Squires operate committees under the supervision of the Counselors; Mr. Paul Ault serves as the Chief Counselor for the Fenwick Squires along with Mr. John Griffith, vice principal at Fenwick. Representatives from the local councils are Mr. Dion Duckett from Franklin and Mr. Mark Tebbe from Lebanon. The committees organize a wide range of activities such as volunteering at soup kitchens, raising funds for children’s hospitals, praying for religious vocations, cleaning up city parks, social activities and membership recruitment drives. Currently, the Fenwick Squires are currently participating in the Book Drive for INVISABLE CHILDREN, leading a letter writing campaign for the Pro-life opposition to the Freedom of Choice Act, collecting Teddy Bears for the “BEAR TO BE DIFFERENT” begun by Freshman Lauren Hawkins (freshman) from Middletown.

Squires raise money for charity through different methods, such as raffles, benefit breakfasts, car washes, sports tournaments and coin collections. Squires get to know one another better as friends by going on camping trips, attending sporting events or sponsoring other activities for young people.

The Fenwick Community is benefiting from having this newly formed Circle in their midst, as they are the recipients of the presence and energy of youth and the service programs conducted by the Squires. For the young men who become Squires, a Circle helps them grow into leaders with a deep love of the Catholic faith.

Fenwick Squires take maintenance ownership of Union Road Cemetery. The cemetery also known as “Dick’s Creek Cemetery” actually belongs to the Franklin Township. The Squires are responsible for the mowing and weed removal, through out the cemetery. It takes about four (4) hours a week to maintain it in the proper care.

At the same time, the Squires will be finishing the “Prayer Labyrinth” in front of Fenwick High School. This project is very time consuming for the Squires. We hope to have it completed by the time school starts, this August!
